[Switzerland] PhD Scholarship in Coherent Low-Energy at University of Zurich
August 24, 2010 at 8:47 AM

Oversampling of a coherent diffraction pattern from a single object is a fairly recent method to solve the phase problem in diffraction techniques. In this way, shape and structure of an individual object can be retrieved without prior assumptions about the phase shift. The oversampling method, pioneered by Prof. John Miao at the University of California, with whom we collaborate on this project, has already been applied to X-rays and high energy electrons.

Instead of X-rays or high energy electrons however, which are known to cause severe damage to biological samples, we shall employ our coherent low energy electron source to obtain over-sampled diffraction patterns with low energy electrons. We believe that this shall lead to a novel tool for structural biology on the single molecule level.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD candidate with a master or diploma degree or equivalent in physics to join this challenging project. She or he will work within a small interdisciplinary team with international partners. Good communication skills and the ability to communicate in English are desirable.

The planned work will involve the operation of a dedicated low energy electron microscope, detector development and optimization for low energy electrons. The candidate may also be involved with the application of biological sample preparation techniques such as freeze drying, nano-structuring by a focussed ion beam (FIB) and the recording of suitable diffraction patterns of individual molecules, which will then be reconstructed in collaboration with Prof. Miao. Depending on the background and interest of the candidate, a well-defined sub-project of the above mentioned tasks will constitute the frame of the thesis work.

The position will be available immediately or at a date of mutual consent. A written application including a CV and a list of up to three references should be sent to Prof. Dr. Hans-Werner Fink, Physik Institut, Winterthurerstrasse 190, University of Zurich, CH-8057 Zurich, Switzerland.

The conditions of employment are in accordance with the agreement by the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
The application must encompass (in this order):
2.      Project description (4-6 pages)
3.      Schedule – time-frame of the PhD
4.      Budget (only if special costs are incurred due to particular empirical studies – or longer stays overseas)
5.      CV
6.      Copies of relevant diplomas and exam-papers
7.      Copies of relevant recommendations and dissertation statement/statements
The project description must describe the area of interest, the considered methods, and the theoretical approaches.
The purpose of the project description is to enable the PhD school to consider the relevance of the project, possible supervisors as well as the likelihood of completion with the timeframe and resources a three-year PhD scholarship provides.
In this aspect a time frame is of great importance. It serves as basis for assessing whether the candidate has a realistic estimation of what one is able to complete in three years.
The budget should not include own salary. It is solely a budget for special expenses either related directly to the project (interview transcriptions, advanced statistical analyses, etc.) or special expenses to study/travel abroad during the education.
Roskilde University encourages all interested regardless of age, gender, religion or ethnic affiliation to apply.

[Portugal] Positions for PhD Studentship in Modelling the Effect of The Chemical Matrix-CNT Interactions on The Composite Electrical Properties
August 23, 2010 at 8:51 AM

Marie Curie Initial Training Network CONTACT(FP7-PEOPLE-ITN-2008-238363) for the tailored supply-chain development of CNT-filled composites with improved mechanical and electrical properties.

Recruiting organisation

I3N – Institute for Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication, University of Minho, Portugal

Subproject title

Modelling the effect of the chemical matrix-CNT interactions on the composite electrical properties

Starting date: 4th January 2011

Background information

Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (ITNs) are joint research and training projects funded by the European Commission. Funding is provided for researchers from both inside and outside Europe to carry out individual project work in a European country other than their own.

The “CONTACT” ITN is made up of 10 partners (coordinated by the Fraunhofer ICT in Germany), and will recruit a total of 15 postgraduates and 3 post docs for project work lasting for 1-3 years. The aim of the project is the tailored industrial supply-chain development of CNT-filled polymer composites with improved mechanical and electrical properties. Project work in the network will include the optimisation of CNT synthesis and functionalisation, dispersion in thermoplastics and thermosets, the processing of CNT compounds, modelling, characterisation and application.

Subproject description:

This subproject will be carried out by one early-stage researcher at I3N over a period of 28 months.

The aim of this project is two-fold:
-  to use molecular dynamics/quantum mechanics to calculate the effect of doping, functionalization and covalent bonding with various polymers affects the electrical properties of individual CNTs;
-  to develop mesoscopic models which incorporate this atomic-level information and to use these models to investigate how the electrical response of composite materials depends on CNT dispersion.

This project will be carried out in parallel with other research projects in the same programme, e.g. "CNT functionalization" and "CNT modification", providing the necessary atomic-scale information to interpret experimental results and to define the most promising
experiments to be performed.

This project will involve the following steps:
1.  Validating the quantum mechanics/molecular dynamics code to be used to investigate the atomic and molecular scale properties of CNTs.  To do so we will investigate the electrical properties of defect-free CNTs of different length, chirality and radius and will compare our results with existing experimental and theoretical results.
2.  Determining how structural defects, doping, functionalization and covalent bonding with semiconducting or insulating polymers affects the electrical properties (charge distribution, electron affinity, ionization energy, electrical conductivity) of individual
CNTs.
3.  Writing a computer code to develop a mesoscopic model of polymer-CNT composite that incorporates the spatial distribution of CNTs and the relevant atomic-level information obtained in the previous steps and systematic investigation of how the electrical properties of the composite are affected by CNT dispersion, concentration, orientation and type of matrix polymer.

Requirements:

Qualifications / experience:

-  Early-stage researcher (in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research career, measured from the date when he/she obtained the degree which would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate)
-  Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Polymer Science or equivalent

Mobility:

-  The applicant can be of any nationality except Portuguese
-  The applicant must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies etc.) in Portugal for more than 12 months in the past three years.
